About the Book

“Jews in Uniform” by Michael Greisman, is a photo-book published by Aster Publishing.

It features a restored photograph from each of the 100+ contributors, with a biography detailing their war-time experiences and memories, plus brief details of their lives before and after the war.

It also includes an ‘introduction’ written by Martin Sugarman and a Recommended Reading List.

The book shows that the Jewish community participated in every aspect of the war effort- from front-line services in the Army, Navy and Air Force, to the Fire & Ambulance Services, the Security Services, the Civil Defence and ARP, the Land Army and Home Guard.

Reviews

‘Jews in Uniform’ teems with charmers and chancers, from the Victoria Cross hero Thomas Gould, whose film-star looks shine out from the page, to more humble contributions such as Civil Defence warden Louisa Frumkin who became mother to former chief rabbi, Lord Sacks.

About The Author

Michael Greisman

For most of my working life, I ran a manufacturing engineering company and now, in my retirement, I am pursuing my life-long passion for photography. I have produced a good number of travel photo-books but more significantly have produced photo-books of aspects of Jewish social history of the community in Britain.  My previous publication, ‘Vintage Glamour in London’s East End’, was a photo-book of Boris Bennett, the iconic wedding and portrait photographer, famous in the 1930’s and 1940’s.
